چکیده

In recent years, there has been wide-spread use of large and high-resolution liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) on handheld devices. The portion of LCD power consumption in the overall system has gradually increased. While most of the previous research on LCD power management has focused on the hardware level, practical mechanisms at the software level are hardly known. This paper presents a power-aware LCD management mechanism, based on dynamic refresh-rate scaling and frame buffer monitoring. The proposed mechanism guarantees the display quality of service, which is inherently specified by content types. The mechanism does not require additional hardware or modifications to applications. The experiment results—on a commercial PDA with a 320 × 240 resolution—show that the proposed mechanisms effectively reduce the power consumption by up to 10%, while satisfying the display quality requirements for the LCD screen. Dynamic voltage frequency scaling-aware refresh management for 3D DRAM over processor architecture

ELECT Three-dimensional integrated systems that combine large-capacity dynamic random access memory (DRAM) with high-performance processors represent a promising solution to implementing high-performance computing. However, in such configurations stacked DRAM cells will inevitably be exposed to high temperatures generated by the processor, thereby necessitating DRAMs with high refresh rates dri...

Mobile GPU Power Consumption Reduction via Dynamic Resolution and Frame Rate Scaling

The emerging industry trend of ever-increasing display density on mobile devices has dramatically increased workload placed on a mobile GPU’s. Because mobile GPU power consumption increases almost linearly with workload, increasing the display density directly decreases battery life of a device. While this tradeoff is acceptable if user experience is improved, display densities beyond that whic...

A low-power portable H.264/AVC decoder using elastic pipeline

We propose an elastic pipeline architecture that can apply dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) to a dedicated hardware, and implement the elastic pipeline to a portable H.264/AVC decoder LSI with embedded frame buffer SRAM. A supply voltage and operating frequency are decreased by a feedback-type voltage/frequency control algorithm. In a portable H.264/AVC decoder, embedded SARM can be utilized as fr...

Low-Power LCD Display Systems

Despite the limited power available in a battery-operated mobile embedded system, its display must have an enough resolution and sufficient color depth to support quality graphical user interfaces and multimedia applications. An LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is a standard display device, and a color TFT (Thin-Film Transistor) LCD is common even in a low-cost equipment. An LCD display system is c...

Time-division color electroholography using one-chip RGB LED and synchronizing controller.

We propose time-division based color electroholography with a one-chip RGB Light Emitting Diode (LED) and a low-priced synchronizing controller. In electroholography, although color reconstruction methods via time-division have already been proposed, the methods require an LCD with a high refresh rate and output signals from the LCD for synchronizing the RGB reference lights such as laser sourc...
